The Great Migration

from
210,000

The Great Migration, consisting of about two millions wildebeests, zebras and other prey animals, generally moves in a clockwise motion through the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania and the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya, and then back again forming one big circle. The exact timing and route of the migration changes from year to year and is entirely dependant on the rains. Typically the migration begins in early April, May and June, when the calves are strong enough and the journey north begins while at Serengeti. From June/July the wildebeest gather in the Western Corridor of the Serengeti National Park and in August/September they cross the Grumeti River and head towards the Maasai Mara in Kenya. From October the animals begin to move back into the Serengeti.

The Great Migration itinerary is designed to take you through the entire migration areas of Kenya & Tanzania. The tour starts from Nairobi then on to the Masai Mara National reserve (by flight) to enjoy Safari rides at the reserve. Enter Tanzania via Lake Victoria then on to Serengeti National Park with safari rides through the Serengeti to witness the famous migration which is one of the most spectacular and overwhelming in nature. Also included is a visit to the NGORONGORO Conservation Area and to a Masai village. The itinerary is further extended to Zanzibar for those who wish to visit this country known for its beautiful beaches.

  1. Day 1 Tue Arrive at Nairobi

Arrival in Nairobi. Assistance at Jomo Kenyatta International airport and transfer to hotel. Rest of the day free. Accommodation.

NB: In your free time we advise you to visit the giraffe centre, the only place in the country where giraffes can be seen very close-up from the observation platforms and even be fed from a balcony. You can also see the elephant orphanage, where the baby elephants and rhinoceros orphans can be observed and sponsored at the centre, and even fed. Do not forget that very near Nairobi is the Karen Blixen Museum, the home of the Danish novelist who wrote Out of Africa. The house, which is decorated with motifs from the film, photographs and objects belonging to the writer, illustrates how life was on this property at the beginning of the last century.

  2. Day 2 Wed Nairobi - Maasai Mara

Breakfast and transfer to Wilson airport for a LIGHT AIRCRAFT (flight included) to the majestic Maasai Mara National Reserve, considered the pearl of the country’s nature. The flight in a light aircraft will give us a scenic view of these hills carpeted with meadows and splashed with acacias that so much remind us of the true African countryside in the mythical film “Out of Africa”, reception on the landing strip and start of the safari in 4×4 to begin to experience an explosion of wildlife. Full Board.

  3. Day 3 Thu Maasai Mara

Breakfast. Full day’s safari in 4×4. We will enjoy the rich diversity of wildlife that will invite us to lose ourselves in its infinite planes to encounter lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants… Until we reach the shores of the river Mara with its chocolate coloured waters in which the hippopotamuses wallow just a few metres from us. The Mara River is the natural barrier that the great migratory herds of gnus and zebras have to cross each year between the Maasai Mara Reserve and the Serengeti National Park. In our camp, we will be in a privileged place to follow the footsteps of this great migration. Walking safari to the main points on the bank where the Great Migration crosses the Mara River. Full Board.

  4. Day 4 Fri Maasai Mara - Lake Victoria

In the early morning we have the option of taking a balloon flight (not included in the tour) silently over the herds as the sun comes up, before a champagne breakfast on the Savannah in the most genuine style of the safaris of yesteryear. Breakfast. In the morning, on the way out of the park we will be seen off by elegant giraffes, many hippopotamuses, gnus, zebras … We cross the border and enter TANZANIA via LAKE VICTORIA, the second largest lake in the world with its local customs and villages of fishermen, which adds a very interesting ethnic touch to the route. A known as Victoria Nyanza or Ukerewe, we will be received by its idiosyncrasy and biodiversity. This place is a privilege off any tourist route. Boat trip in the evening to enjoy the sunset and the wealth of birds that this unknown paradise offers. Full Board.

NB: Keep your documents at hand because on this day we will have to cross the border to go into Tanzania. At some times of year the accommodation at Lake Victoria might not be the Lukuba Island Lodge (a private island on the lake) but the Speke Bay Lodge on the shore.

  5. Day 5 Sat Lake Victoria – Serengeti

After breakfast we will have another 45-minute boat trip to see the fishermen and their traditional fishing techniques. We go on to the SERENGETI National Park, the natural extension of the Maasai Mara Reserve in Kenya. Every year between July and October, nearly a million and a half gnus, 250,000 zebras and half a million gazelle, followed by a court of lions and hyenas, cross this border in search of fresh pasture. These are the famous migrations, one of the most spectacular and overwhelming in nature. Safari by 4×4. This evening we will be received by the camp staff on our return and can relax with a marvellous dinner under the stars, all in the purest style of Out of Africa. Full Board.

NB: Our accommodation in Serengeti is inside the Seronera area classified as PREMIUM due to its exclusiveness and distance from any neighbouring camp and the main road. In the morning and the evening we can enjoy a safari of more than 1 hour completely alone before we reach the main roads of the park.

  6. Day 6 Sun Breakfast at Serengeti

Second day of our Safari Camp in the middle of Seronera (Serengeti National Park). The best safaris, or at least the best possibility of witnessing hunting scenes, are at dawn, when the Savannah awakens and the night animals are still active, and in the evening. We will spend these times looking for the big five: lions, buffaloes, elephants, rhinoceroses and leopards. Full day safari by 4×4. We will sleep amidst one of the largest sanctuaries of wildlife on the planet. Its countryside is in the mythical image of Africa: huge spaces, deep blue skies scattered with clouds, cold sunrises and dusks of fire, and at night a unique show of stars. Full Board.

  7. Day 7 Mon Serengeti – Ngorongoro

A safari at dusk on the way to the NGORONGORO Conservation Area. We will go through another very special area of the Serengeti National Park, which are the Kopjes, islands of rocks in a sea of grass on which lions, leopards and cheetahs love to rest. Breakfast. Time permitting; we have the option of visiting the Olduvai Gorge where many fossils have been found of the first hominids. Before we reach our accommodation, we will visit a Maasai village of the Ngorongoro region. In addition to spectacular visits to the greater, our camp will provide a real Maasai experience, being able to live with and enjoy a chat and a glass of wine around the fire with our Maasais looking after the camp; a memory that is sure to be etched on our minds. Full Board at our campsite next to the crater at an altitude of 2300 m.

NB: our accommodation offers amazing, privileged and unique views of the Ngorongoro crater. We have been awarded by the authorities of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area as the best company in the world in ecotourism and preservation of the environment. Each traveller contributes to a magical symbiosis between tourism, Maasai life, fauna and safaris.

  8. Day 8 Tue Ngorongoro – Arusha

Breakfast. At first light, we take our 4×4 into the Ngorongoro Crater for our safari. No reserve offers such a grandiose spectacle as Ngorongoro’s volcanic crater, 600 metres deep and more than 20 kilometres wide, containing the largest “permanent” concentration of wildlife in Africa. Here we find wild animals and Maasai herdsmen living together. Spectacular scenery inhabited by over 40,000 Maasai herdsmen, dominated by the Rift Valley and the nine volcanoes of Ngorongoro that started to grow more than 4 million years ago.

The only one still active is Oldoinyo Lengai; God’s mountain for the Maasais. The Ngorongoro crater, a giant volcano which was probably originally higher than Kilimanjaro itself provides grazing for thousands of gnus, zebras, buffaloes, gazelles, lions… which, unlike in Serengeti, do not migrate due to the continuous presence of water in the area which assures their sustenance. Lunch included. And after our unique and exclusive experience in the crater of the so-called volcano of Eden, we make our way to ARUSHA. Arrival and accommodation.

  9. Day 9 Wed Arusha - Zanzibar

Transfer to the airport and end of our services for OPTION 1

As a general rule, refunds will be maximum if you cancel more than two months in advance. As you go closer to the date of departure, refunds will shrink. Hotels follow a similar policy. In case of a package tour, the cancellation and refund policies will be mentioned in detail in the booking forms and you would be informed about these at the time of booking.
